CCL 2018: Saturday Seminar on Communication Skills for Advocates
Thursday Jun 21, 2018
Thursday Jun 21, 2018
Motivational Interviewing (MI) offers a set of communication tools anyone can use in their advocacy work. These tools sidestep resistance, promote collaboration and lead others to make the case for change. MI has 30 years of research and over 1200 published studies supporting its effectiveness across a wide variety of situations.
This 3-hour workshop provides participants with an introduction and hands-on experience with MI’s unique approach to collaboration for change. During the last hour we will demonstrate how to use MI in lobby meetings, coaching conversations with volunteers, new member interviews, handling conflicts in a group, climate change conversations in social situations and related topics suggested by the audience.

CCL seeks to create the conditions for climate legislation by building relationships with people from all backgrounds and beliefs. In this session we will consider some essential questions to expand our outreach and alliances: Who aren't we talking to? What gets in the way of talking to them? What gets in the way of listening?
How do we deepen our connections with people and organizations that come from different traditions, cultures or ethnic heritages than our own? Our participants will have the opportunity to explore their experiences building relationships with people from different traditions, cultures or ethnic heritages and to increase their capacity to develop those relationships through practice in small groups.

CCL is built around advocacy for a carbon pricing plan we call the Carbon Fee & Dividend. We all know that, and we all know that the relative simplicity of the proposal is one of its greatest attractions.
However, the word relative is important because nothing in the world of Federal policy is truly as simple as we would like to believe. This is often revealed when volunteers ask questions about the CFD that are not so easy to answer.
In this three-hour session, we will take the time to examine your questions about the CFD and may be raised by other stakeholders such as members of Congress, their aides, affected business entities, state and local governments, community organizations, and American families.
The session will begin with a one-hour review of the CFD policy framework as it has also been informed by the REMI, Dividend Delivery, and Household Impact studies. In the second hour, we'll form breakout teams to develop key questions on specific topic areas. The third hour will consist of an open forum to discuss questions developed by the breakout teams and from individual participants. The results will be consolidated into a report following the conference.
Speakers are: Rick Knight, Citizens' Climate Lobby/Citizens' Climate Education, Research Coordinator Allen Lerman, Former Department of Treasury Economist Danny Richter, PhD, Citizens' Climate Lobby, Legislative & Science Director

Jessie Diggins Endorsement Video - Citizens Climate Lobby
Thursday Jun 21, 2018
Thursday Jun 21, 2018
USA Gold Medal Winter Olympian Jessie Diggins gives a shoutout for Citizens' Climate Lobby and its flagship policy Carbon Fee & Dividend:
"You can look at different solutions for the economy, but you only get one earth to live on, and you have to breathe the air that is on this earth. We have to do it in a way that doesn’t hurt families economically, which is why I’m supporting the carbon fee and dividend solution, because it puts a fee on carbon and returns the revenue to households."

This training features Jim Tolbert, CCL Conservative Director and Stephanie Doyle, National Outreach and Partnership Coordinator.
Communication is critically important in engaging with conversations that advance support for solutions like Carbon Fee and Dividend that manage climate change risks.
As advocates for climate change policy, CCL volunteers may need to overcome preconceptions of who we are, how we operate, and what we’re about.
Jim and Stephanie will show how solutions-focused climate change communicators can convey their message more effectively to both conservative and progressive audiences.
Core Volunteer Training is created to help connect newer volunteers with each other from across the world and empower them to achieve their larger goals for climate advocacy.

Joining our June call is Nathaniel Stinnett, founder and executive director of Environmental Voter Project. Their mission is to identify citizens concerned about environmental issues who are staying home on election day and turn them into active voters. Stinnett has held a variety of senior leadership and campaign manager positions on U.S. Senate, congressional, state, and mayoral campaigns. He was named one of America’s 50 environmental visionaries and is a frequent speaker on cutting-edge campaign techniques at top universities and campaign management trainings.
