The panel will explore the questions, “How will climate change affect our national security and what should we be doing about it  NOW? “  It will provide information for volunteers to use in meetings with MoC’s offices on Lobby Day and in grass roots efforts at home.  LtGen Castellaw will address the issue from two perspectives, his extensive military career and his experience since then as CEO of Farmspace Systems LLC in communicating  common values with farmers and rural communities.  Roger Sorkin will discuss his new organization, the Tidewater Security Project, which harnesses the power of film to move leaders and fellow citizens toward strengthening our national security against the greatest environmental threats civilization has ever faced.

Support from organized labor will be important to Congress passing our legislation. Two of our panelists will help us to understand how labor and unions see climate change and the challenges and opportunities it presents, and will share how their organizations are helping workers to address them. Our third panelist is a RN and Certified Nurse-Midwife who works with other nurses in the U.S. and globally on a variety of environmental health issues including climate change.  We may learn information which can help us in our lobbying on Tuesday.

Although climate change is everywhere, its impacts are borne unevenly, and those most vulnerable bear the harshest consequences. We will illuminate the chains of cause and effect linking global warming to ongoing disruptions in the Arctic, the Amazon, and to the avian populations that rely on rainforests, arctic habitats, and everywhere in between.  Having broken the planetary carbon cycle, and in addition to reducing sources of carbon (by for example pricing carbon) we must repair carbon sinks that we’ve damaged and prevent future damage. From this perspective, we’ll take a brief look at the role of the Arctic and forests in terms of what’s happening now and opportunities for restorative action.
