Getting Everything Right: Ambitious Global Climate Action after Paris

The Paris Agreement brings all 195 nations that are parties to the 1992 UN Climate Convention into an active role in combatting climate change. It adds new principles to international law—like adherence to intergenerational equity and coherence of direction in decarbonization—and sends the strongest signal the world has yet seen to investors everywhere to change practices and eliminate climate damage from their activities. Climate Justice

The environmental and climate justice movement is one that holds an utmost importance to the fight for a livable climate.  During this session we will hear from three unique organizations to better understand where they see the climate justice movement at now, and where they see it going in the future and what the major issues they see currently facing the communities they represent are. The panels goal is that we can all come away with a deeper understanding of this movement and begin to work towards some productive and respectful partnerships going forward.

From the Arctic to the Amazon Protecting Vulnerable Places and Populations

Although climate change is everywhere, its impacts are borne unevenly, and those most vulnerable bear the harshest consequences. We will illuminate the chains of cause and effect linking global warming to ongoing disruptions in the Arctic, the Amazon, and to the avian populations that rely on rainforests, arctic habitats, and everywhere in between.  Having broken the planetary carbon cycle, and in addition to reducing sources of carbon (by for example pricing carbon) we must repair carbon sinks that we’ve damaged and prevent future damage. From this perspective, we’ll take a brief look at the role of the Arctic and forests in terms of what’s happening now and opportunities for restorative action.

Oceans and Global Change Breakout from the 2016 CCL Conference

The oceans play an important role in the earth’s climate system, absorbing both heat and carbon  While these processes act to mitigate the effects of global warming, they are not without their own consequences. In this session, panelists will discuss some of the impacts on ocean circulation, sea level rise, ocean acidification, and marine life.  The panel will also explore how reductions in greenhouse gas emissions would help mitigate these effects.

Agriculture and climate change affect each other powerfully: agriculture's significant emissions exacerbate climate change; climate change brings extreme and unpredictable weather, threatening crops, livelihoods, and food security.  To protect all these, and planetary health, agriculture is already figuring out how to get “climate-smart” and lower its emissions of heat-trapping gases: methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide.   What does this climate-smart farming look like, on farms small and large, across the U.S.?  How do farmers shift to doing this?  How long does the transition take?  Do farmers want to shift?  What support and incentives are there for shifting?  And how does carbon pricing fit in?

Bessie Schwarz was our guest speaker for the June 2016 monthly call. Bessie is the Communications Strategist for the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCCC), managing media, and outreach analysis. She comes to YPCCC with extensive experience designing, running and winning national and local grassroots campaigns. She has worked with Citizens’ Climate Lobby to help CCL groups leverage the polling information found in YPCCC’s Climate Opinion Maps, which provide state- and district-level detail on public opinion about climate change and climate solutions.
